Clopay Roller Replacement: The Cinco Ranch Owner’s Guide

We carry Clopay-compatible rollers on the truck and can usually replace them same day in Cinco Ranch. A full roller swap on a standard two-car door runs $110 to $220 installed, parts and labor included. Most owners discover a bad roller the same way: the door starts sounding like it’s dragging gravel, or one side hangs lower than the other when it’s partway up.

If your Clopay door is grinding, shaking, or binding on one side, a failed roller is the likely culprit. Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dime.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used two main roller sizes for residential doors: 2-inch rollers on standard residential tracks and 3-inch rollers on heavier doors or low-headroom setups. Most Cinco Ranch homes with Clopay doors from the last 20 years run 2-inch nylon rollers, but we’ve seen 3-inch steel rollers on older custom builds out near Firethorne and parts of the master-planned sections.

How to tell what you’ve got: look at the roller wheel itself. A 2-inch roller will have “2” stamped on the nylon wheel or the bracket. If there’s no marking, measure the wheel diameter across the face. The stem length matters too, usually 4 to 7 inches depending on how deep the hinge sits. Get that wrong and the door binds against the track.

One thing to know about Clopay specifically: their nylon rollers use a heat-treated steel stem that’s sized to match Clopay hinge holes precisely. Generic aftermarket rollers sometimes have stems a hair undersized, which lets the roller wobble and chew up the hinge over time. We stock OEM-spec Clopay-compatible rollers with the correct stem tolerance, not the cheapest thing on the shelf. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Clopay, which means we can tell you honestly when the aftermarket option is just as good and when it isn’t.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • Grinding or scraping noise when the door moves. The ball bearings inside the roller have worn flat, so metal is riding on metal. This gets worse fast and starts scoring the track.
  • Door shakes or shudders on the way up. A roller with a seized bearing doesn’t spin, it skids. That drag makes the whole door rattle and puts extra strain on the opener.
  • One side sits lower than the other mid-travel. A collapsed or chipped wheel changes the door’s geometry. The low side is where the bad roller is.
  • Visible flat spots or cracks on the nylon wheel. Cinco Ranch heat and humidity age nylon faster than you’d think. Once the wheel shows cracking or a flat spot, it’s done.
  • The door jumps or buckles at certain points in the track. That’s usually a roller hitting a worn section of track or a bent stem catching on the hinge. Either way, running it makes the damage worse.

The rule here is simple: if it rolls and closes clean, we’re done. If it doesn’t, we’re not leaving. That’s how we’ve worked Cinco Ranch for years, and it’s why we don’t replace one roller and pretend the other nine are fine. We’ll check every roller on the door while we’re there, because a door that’s been running on a bad roller for a month has usually put stress on the ones next to it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Clopay roller replacement in Cinco Ranch, plan on $110 to $220 installed for a full set on a standard two-car door. That includes:

  • All rollers replaced (usually 10 to 12 per door, depending on panel count)
  • OEM-spec Clopay-compatible rollers with correct stem tolerance
  • Hinge inspection and tightening while we’re in there
  • Light track lubrication if the track has no visible damage

The range depends on a few things: how many panels your door has, whether we’re doing a full set or just the damaged ones, and whether the hinges or brackets need attention from running on a bad roller. The price we quote on the phone is the price you pay when we arrive. That’s not a policy, it’s how Otto Reinhardt has run this business since 2004, and it’s written on every invoice.

Here’s what roller replacement costs compared to other common Clopay repairs in this area:

  • Roller replacement: $110-$220
  • Cable repair: $130-$250
  • Track realignment: $120-$240
  • Spring repair: $180-$340
  • General garage door repair: $150-$600

Every roller job includes the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a roller fails or the door misbehaves within 90 days, one call to Otto brings us back. No escalation, no ticket number, no third-party claims adjuster.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a bottom roller on a Clopay door is not a DIY job, and I’ll tell you why plainly: the bottom bracket and roller attach to the cable that holds the lifting tension from the spring. Even with the door up, that cable is under load. Remove the wrong bolt and the cable can whip free with enough force to take off a finger or worse. The rollers higher up are simpler, but reach them wrong and you’re on a ladder with a moving door overhead.

What you can safely do yourself: look at the rollers with the door closed. If you see cracked nylon, flat spots, or a wheel that doesn’t touch the track evenly, you’ve found the problem. That’s worth knowing before you call. But the actual swap on Clopay doors should be left to someone who respects what that cable is holding. A door is 200 pounds riding on two springs. Respect it, and call us at (346) 586-0344. We’ll quote it right then and hold the number.
