Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement: The Cinco Ranch Owner’s Guide

Raynor cable and drum replacement in Cinco Ranch typically runs $130 to $250 installed, and we stock the common Raynor sizes on the truck, so most cable swaps happen same day. You’ll usually know before we do: the door hangs crooked when it opens, you hear a snap and one side drops, or the door jams halfway up with a grinding noise. That’s a cable that’s given up, and the drum it rides on is usually part of why.

Call (346) 586-0344

The frustration is real, especially when your only vehicle is sitting inside that garage at seven in the morning. We answer at that hour, and Otto quotes the job on that call and holds the number when we get there.

Which Raynor Models This Applies To

Raynor has used a few different drum profiles over the years, and it matters. The older Ponderosa and Decade lines used a standard 4-inch drum with a shallow groove. The newer Airman and Reliant series, especially the high-lift track setups you see on some Cinco Ranch homes with steeper driveways, run a drum with a deeper, tapered groove. Put the wrong drum on, and the cable stacks up unevenly, grinds on the first open, and you’re buying another cable inside a month.

How to know what you’ve got: look at the end bearing plate above the door. There’s usually a white label with the Raynor part number. If the label’s gone, we measure the drum across the groove and count the cable wraps at full open. Takes two minutes, and it tells us everything. For Raynor specifically, we prefer OEM drums and bearings when the door’s under ten years old. On older doors where the OEM drum’s been discontinued, a quality aftermarket equivalent from the same supplier network holds up fine; we just won’t put a bargain-bin drum on and call it done. We’re an independent shop, not a Raynor dealer, so we stock what actually lasts rather than what a franchise agreement tells us to carry. We also keep LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie parts on board for openers, but this page’s repair is all about the door.

Signs Your Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Door hangs crooked when opening or closing. One cable has stretched or slipped a groove on the drum. When the drum can’t spool it evenly, the door lifts uneven and the whole track takes side load it wasn’t built for.
  • A loud snap, then one side of the door drops. That’s the cable separating under tension. The door is now riding on one cable only, and the spring is pulling hard on whatever’s left. Don’t try to open it.
  • Visible fraying or birdcaging near the bottom bracket. Cables fail where they bend: the loop at the bottom fixture. Texas humidity gets in the strands, a little rust starts, and the individual wires start poking out. When you see three or more broken strands, the clock’s running.
  • Scraping or grinding at the top when the door moves. The cable has jumped off the drum and is now wrapping on the shaft itself. This chews up the shaft, the drum face, and anything in the path.
  • Door stops dead halfway with the motor straining. The cable’s off one drum and has bound itself between the shaft and the bearing. The opener is fighting the bind. Every cycle makes the repair bigger.

If you see any of these on a Cinco Ranch morning, don’t run the door again. Each run is doing more damage to the drum and shaft.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Raynor cable and drum replacement in Cinco Ranch runs $130 to $250 installed for most single doors. If both cables need replacing, or the shaft bearings are worn, the price lands at the top of that range. You’ll get the exact number on the phone before we roll, and that number does not change between the driveway and the invoice. If it’s done right, the written price is the price.

What’s included: both cables replaced as a set (we never do one side only; the pair wears together), inspection of both drums with replacement if needed, bearing and shaft inspection, bottom bracket check, and a full door balance and travel test after the swap. Every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right at no charge. And yes, we answer the phone when you call to say so.

For a full breakdown of what affects pricing:

  • Cables only, drums reusable: $130-$180
  • Cables plus one drum: $170-$220
  • Cables plus both drums and bearings: $200-$250
  • Add a spring replacement at the same visit: $180-$340 more, and we’ll tell you if yours is weak while we’re in there

You’ll know the number before we start, not after. That’s how Otto’s run it since 2004.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. There is nothing safe about working the cable side of a garage door. Those cables carry the full tension of the spring system. A door is 200 pounds riding on two springs. Respect it. If a spring still has tension and you loosen the wrong thing at the wrong moment, that cable turns into a high-speed steel whip. The drum side is where the danger is.

What you can safely do: look at the cables with the door closed. Check for fraying near the bottom bracket. Take a picture and send it to Otto. That visual helps us stock the truck before we even leave. What you don’t do: attempt any cable re-wrap, any drum adjustment, or any work that involves touching the bottom bracket bolts. We replace cables every week in Cinco Ranch, and a good share of those calls start as, “I gave it a try and it went sideways.” Skip the sideways. Call (346) 586-0344, and we’ll be out with the right drum and the right cable the first time.
